Bowie the cat went from homeless to internet superstar because of his striking looks.
The cat has gone viral for his mismatched eyes, resembling David Bowie’s alter ego Ziggy Stardust.
Bowie was found as an abandoned kitten when he was just 3-months-old and taken to a local animal shelter in Benidorm, Spain.
One blue, one green
He was soon adopted by his mom Maria Lloret. Lloret was smitten with the kitten’s warm and cuddly demeanor.
But also his incredibly unique look. Bowie has a rare condition called heterochromia, where one’s has two different colored eyes.
Bowie’s left eye is bright green, while his right is a beautiful blue. Maria couldn’t wait to bring him home.
“My sister saw an advertisement looking for a family for Bowie and when we met him, we fell in love. He was obviously a beautiful cat but he was also so loving, always purring and looking for some warmth. The moment he got home, he started to eat like crazy and fell asleep in my arms,” Lloret told Bored Panda.
Lloret is a David Bowie fan and couldn’t think of a more fitting name for the cat since he reminded her of Ziggy Stardust.
The singer had a condition called anisocoria that caused his two eyes to be different. One had a larger dilated pupil, and the other didn’t due to a childhood injury.
His character Ziggy Stardust also had a lightning bolt across his face, which reminded Lloret of her cat’s multicolored patches in the middle of his face. Lloret said she was fully aware that the singer didn’t have heterochromia but still saw a resemblance.
“As Bowie’s fans, we knew it when we named our cat after him. But when I saw his face, I couldn’t think of a better name! With his blue and green eyes and the marking on his nose… it was the perfect name,” she said.
Super cat stardom
Lloret posted a few pictures of the unique-looking feline on social media, where they went viral. Now Bowie has more than 33,000 followers on Instagram who admire his stunning appearance.
But when Bowie isn’t busy being an internet superstar posing for pictures for his adoring fans, he’s just a fun-loving kitty.
“When he sees the bag of treats he always starts purring instantly. Oh! And his favorite toys are little mice (the ones with things inside, so they make sounds when you shake them). It’s so funny to see him playing because he throws them in the air to catch them again,” Lloret said.
